The Green Deal Signs Up Only 12 Homes

The green deal that was set up by the government has failed to sign up as many homeowners as the government had hoped it would. So far the scheme has only signed up 12 homes with a further 325 homes agreeing to take part in the scheme. The Green Deal is a scheme that will help you with the costs of making your home more energy-efficient. To take part in the scheme a Green Deal assessor will come along and inspect your property to tell you what works you could have done. These include solar panels, cavity insulation, double glazing and loft insulation.

You would then have these works carried out at your own expense and be given a voucher for 50% of the works when the works have been completed. The scheme also offers homeowners a loan in order to pay for the works. The idea is that the works would be eventually paid for by the amount of energy that you are saving. The loan would be attached to the deeds of the property so that it would be transferred to the new owner if the property was sold prior to the loan being repaid.

The government is keen to get as many homes signed up to the scheme as it helps with its carbon emissions reduction programme but the problem is that homeowners simply can’t afford to spend large sums of money on energy-saving schemes when we are just emerging from the worst recession in living memory. Many families are struggling to pay the bills and spending money on these works is just not realistic.
